Continuity of care is an important part of any health plan and dental health is no exception. Keeping your mouth healthy is an essential piece of your overall health. It’s also important to keep your dentist informed of any changes in your overall health since many medical conditions can affect your dental health too.

How do I know if my toothache is an emergency?
Toothaches can occur for many reasons, from infection to a piece of food stuck between teeth. Before you make an emergency appointment, you can try brushing and flossing your teeth to see if the toothache is due to something stuck in the teeth. If that does not help, or pain continues for a few days, it’s best to schedule an appointment for evaluation and treatment.
When should I go to the hospital versus the dentist?
If you experience any sort of traumatic injury to the face or head such as dislocation, abrasions that won’t stop bleeding, broken jaw or loss of consciousness, you should visit the local emergency room right away instead of calling the dentist. Once medical care has been received, you can schedule a follow-up with the dentist for any dental treatment that is needed.
I knocked out a tooth, can it be saved?
- Rinse, do not scrub, the tooth to remove dirt or debris
- Place the clean tooth in your mouth between your cheek and gum or under your tongue
- Do not attempt to replace the tooth into the socket as this could cause further damage
- Get to the dentist. Successful re-implantation is possible only when treatment is performed promptly
- If it is not possible to store the tooth in the mouth of the injured person, wrap the tooth in a clean gauze and immerse it in milk and give us a call at (916) 784-0900.
